Farmers warned to check insurance small print

Livestock farmers have been advise to double check their insurance policies to ensure they cover whole herds and flocks. Many farmers choose to just cover a certain number or a proportion of their stock in order to reduce premiums.

The darker winter months often prompt a spike in rustling and illegal butchery.

Livestock theft is now one of the costliest crimes for the UK’s farming sector, with more than £2.5m worth of animals stolen in 2018. Incidents are up by more than 10% over the past two years, with dozens or even hundreds of sheep being stolen in a single raid.

The sheer scale of recent crimes has meant that some victims had not been fully covered and had incurred losses as a result.
