HMRC has started to send text messages to taxpayers who contact their helplines by mobile phone.
The new service was launched on 19 January and HMRC will use the service to provide information on gov.uk which will help with enquiries after a taxpayer has spoken to an advisor.
HMRC will tell callers on the call if they will be sending a text message with relevant information. The text will not contain any personal or insensitive information and will likely contain a link to relevant gov.uk information or an online chat. HMRC will never ask for personal or financial information over text.
Instances where text messages will be offered or sent include:
- How to find your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
- Help registering for HMRC online services
- Lost or forgotten online service password or user ID
- Queries on whether they should register for self-assessment or still have to complete a tax return
- Requests for income and employment history
- Lost National Insurance number, or a letter confirming their number
- Help filling in a tax return
Any suspicious text messages should be forward to 60599 (standard network charges apply) or emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
